Suburban Outfitters
As you sit in your local Starbucks bemoaning the fact that your hip city days sipping local brew in the West Village are behind you, you realize, albeit begrudgingly, that given your life stage of kids and carpools, your café society days would have been numbered anyway. Still, that doesn't stop you from craving the occasional dip in the cool pool, especially when it comes to shopping.
For Brooklyn born Bahr Brown, his daily venture across the Hudson from Harlem to open his funky Dobbs Ferry shop The Rec Room, is firmly grounded in the belief that suburban families have "cool" as well. Sitting on the corner of Cedar Street in downtown Dobbs, Bahr's modern and lofty space, is strategically sparse yet colorful and -- for lack of a better word -- fun.
Merchandise is displayed on engine-red racks and folded on a giant ping-pong table. The recreational theme merges a hang-out feel with high-trend "street" brands like Clawmouth, Junkfood and Stussy. Catering to the stroller crowd that pass by all day long, the store carries jeans, tees, accessories, shoes and so forth for babies, tweens, and dads with the progressive eye. An Urban Outfitters with soul, Rec Room offers other lifestyle items like retro-cool collectible toys, vintage table-tennis sets, rare reggae CD's, custom sneakers and other items in keeping with the downtown vibe.
Brown wants The Rec Room to be a destination; it is already the spot for monthly art openings, open mike poetry reading and other events. "The Rec Room is a showcase for stuff I love - from music to clothes, toys and accessories. I wanted to bring new products and a great boutique experience to Westchester. In this day and age of fast information, kids everywhere know what's hot. Why wouldn't they want it in their own backyard?"
After all that shopping, no doubt you'll be in need of an energy boost.
